Fishing with a Fluke Drift Rig:
-
Drift with the Current: The key to fluke fishing is covering ground. Position your boat so that it drifts with the current over areas where fluke are likely to be—sandy bottoms, drop-offs, ledges, and near structure.
-
Maintain Bottom Contact: Fluke are bottom dwellers, so it’s important that your rig stays near or in contact with the bottom. Lift and drop the rod slowly as you drift to keep the bait moving naturally and bouncing along the bottom.
-
Adjust Weight: Depending on the speed of your drift, you may need to adjust the weight of your sinker or bucktail jig. The goal is to get the bait down quickly and keep it at the desired depth without snagging on the bottom.
-
Set the Hook: With fluke, it’s important to give them a moment to take the bait before setting the hook. When you feel a bite, wait a second or two before lifting the rod to set the hook, especially when using bait. If you’re using circle hooks, a slow lift will automatically set the hook in the fish’s mouth.
